Vitis vinifera

Latin Name Vitis vinifera; Vitis euvitis
English Name Grape; Grapeseed
Hindi Name Angoor
Part Used Fruit

1Grapes are a nourishing fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. A period of time on a diet based entirely on the fruit is especially recommended in the treatment of torpid liver or sluggish biliary function. 2Grapes are a good source of bioflavonoid (vitamin P), which is known to be useful in such conditions as purpura, capillary bleeding in diabetes, edema and inflammation from injury, radiation damage, and atherosclerosis. Catechins and anthocyanogenic tannins present in grapes possess bioflavonoid activity. Grapes are demulcent, laxative, refrigerant, stomachic, diuretic and cooling. Raisins (dry fruit) are laxative, demulcent and expectorant.

3Grape seed and skin contain several active components including flavonoids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, procyanidines, and the stilbene derivative resveratrol. Grape seed extract in particular has been reported to possess a broad spectrum of pharmacological and therapeutic effects such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities, as well as having cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects.
