Saxifraga granulata
(Stone Crusher Plant) Pashanbhed:
It is a prominent Ayurvedic herb
used for the treatment of various urinary tract disorders. Any
problem related to urinary tract like burning micturition, painful
micturition, urinary retention, pain in lower abdomen (a sign of
urinary tract infection) can be encountered with this herb. It
cleanses the whole urinary tract and maintains urinary flow, reduces
the chance of infection and maintains specific gravity of urine. It
helps dissolve the urinary stones and prevents its occurrence. This
herb has been proved to be effective with other constituents of this
formulation as a lithotriptic (dissolves deposits of kidney and
urinary tract) by regulating the crystalloid-colloid imbalance and
relieving the binding agent of calculi i.e. mucin. This results in
the spontaneous flushing of calculi due to diuresis (increased flow
of urine).

Phyllanthus niruri
(Shatterstone) Bhumyamalaki:
The plant is commonly used in
urogenital and hepatic disorders. It is used against renal colic,
and as an effective remedy to eliminate kidney stones and urinary
tract infection. Phyllanthus niruri is a plant that has been shown
to interfere in the growth and aggregation of calcium oxalate (CaOx)
crystals. Clinical studies suggest that Phyllanthus niruri
interfered with the arrangement of the precipitating crystals,
probably by modifying the crystal-crystal and crystal-matrix
interactions. It may have a therapeutic potential, since it was able
to modify the shape and texture of calculi to a smoother and
probably more fragile form, which could contribute to elimination
and dissolution of calculi.
A potent antispasmodic alkaloid was
found in P. niruri that relaxes the smooth muscle of urinary tract
and facilitates the expulsion of kidney stones. Regular
self-administration of Phyllanthus niruri results in an increased
stone-free rate in the persons having tendency of the formation of
the renal stones.

Tribulus terrestris
(Land Caltrops) Gokshura:
Tribulus terrestris has long been
used empirically to propel urinary stones. The herb shows the
diuretic and contractile effect which indicates that it has the
potential of propelling urinary stones. Tribulus terrestris exhibits
the antiurolithiatic activity and cleanses the toxins from the
kidney. Antimicrobial activity of aqueous extracts from fruits,
leaves and roots of Tribulus terrestris, used as urinary
anti-infective in Ayurveda, was examined against 11 species of
pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms. All the extracts from
the different parts of the plant showed antimicrobial activity
against most tested microorganisms.
The oral administration of
methanolic fraction of Tribulus terrestris fruit extract provided
protection against the mercuric chloride induced toxicity in the
mice. The fruits of Tribulus are cooling, tonic, diuretic and
antimicrobial thus useful in painful micturition.
