Inflammatory bowel disease refers to two
chronic diseases that cause inflammation of
the intestines:
Ulcerative Colitis
and Crohn's disease. Although the
diseases have some features in common, there
are some important differences. Ulcerative
colitis is an inflammatory disease of the
large intestine, also called the colon. In
ulcerative colitis, the inner lining - or
mucosa
- of the intestine becomes inflamed and
develops ulcers. Ulcerative colitis is often
the most severe in the rectal area, which
can cause frequent diarrhoea. Mucus and
blood often appear in the stool (feces) if
the lining of the colon is damaged.
Crohn's disease
differs from ulcerative colitis in the areas of the bowel it
involves - it most commonly affects the last part of the small
intestine and parts of the large intestine. However, Crohn's
disease isn't limited to these areas and can attack any part of the
digestive tract. Crohn's disease causes inflammation that extends
much deeper into the layers of the intestinal wall than ulcerative
colitis does. Crohn's disease generally tends to involve the entire
bowel wall, whereas ulcerative colitis affects only the lining of
the bowel.
ULCOBLISS
is a completely herbal formulation which promotes total intestinal
health and effectively reduces inflammation in the intestine. It
helps stop the repeated episodes of diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
It promotes healing of ulcer and helps strengthen intestinal
immunity.

Boswellia serrata
(Indian Frankincense Tree) Shallaki:
In ancient Ayurveda text boswellia was used for joint disorder
& Raktaja Atisar (blood mixed diarrhea).
Pharmacological studies have found that
extract from the gum resin of Boswellia
serrata (Indian olibanum, a relative of
frankincense) possesses
anti-inflammatory properties. In
particular, the boswellic acids which is
the active principle in Boswellia
serrata, inhibit the enzyme
5-lipoxygenase which is responsible for
the production of leukotrienes.
Since the inflammatory process in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
is associated with increased function of leukotrienes, the benefits
of Boswellia in the treatment of both chronic colitis (ulcerative
colitis) and Crohn's disease have shown positive result. It also
directly inhibits intestinal motility with a mechanism involving
L-type Ca2+ channels. The extract of Boswellia serrata
prevents diarrhea and normalizes intestinal motility in
pathophysiological state. These results could explain, at least in
part, the clinical efficacy of this Ayurvedic remedy in reducing
diarrhoea in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Glycyrrhiza glabra
(Licorice) Mulethi:
Licorice is a sweet and soothing herb that has been
appreciated for its medicinal qualities
for thousands of years. Licorice has
been used in the healing of ulcer and in
irritable condition of mucous membrane.
The demulcent actions of the root
extract coats and soothes the ulcerated
tissue in crohn’s disease and ulcerative
colitis. Licorice has also got
immunomodulatory and adaptogenic
property, which is required in
inflammatory bowel diseases.

Cyperus
rotundus
(Nut grass) Nagarmotha:
Nagarmotha has
very good digestive and carminative properties. Nagarmotha
essential oil is an effective killer of intestinal worms, a
diuretic and anti-pyretic medicine. Ancient Ayurvedic texts have
also described Nagarmotha as an anti-inflammatory medicine, a
general and nervine tonic. It is good for diarrhea, intestinal
bleeding, dysentery, specific and non-specific colitis.

Aegle
marmelos
(Bael) Bilva:
The
various parts of the bael plant are used in Ayurveda and Unani
medicine for treatment of a variety of diseases, including
treatment of diarrhea, dysentery and dyspeptic symptoms. It
contains tannin and mucilaginous substances which have been
clinically proven to help patients suffering from
diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. Marmelosin, isolated
from the bael plant, has been reported to have anti-helminthic and
anti-bacterial activity. Further gastroenterological interest in
bael comes from the finding that oral administration of luvangetin,
a pyranocoumarin isolated from the seeds of Aegle marmelos,
protected against multiple models of gastro-intestinal tract
ulceration.

Curcuma longa
(Turmeric) Haldi:
The
active ingredient of turmeric reduces the production of an
inflammatory chemical called NF-kappaB. This chemical is involved
in a variety of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, dementia
and bowel disease. The scientists discovered that turmeric is able
to reduce inflammation in the lining of the bowel and improve
overall bowel health. Inflammation is not the only change that
takes place in the bowel during an Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
attack. The small muscles around the bowel can also become
irritated and cause muscle cramps, which is manifested by the
sensation of needing to get to a toilet straight away.
Turmeric significantly blocks these abnormal muscle cramps and
relaxes the bowel muscles, so helping to improve the movements of
the smooth muscle within the bowel. Turmeric is able to block the
chemical histamine, which can also cause the small muscles of the
bowel to contract abnormally. This dual action of Turmeric's i.e
ability to reduce bowel inflammation as well as in controlling
abnormal muscle contractions in the bowel, translates into less
frequent and less severe IBS attacks. In particular, as the
functioning of the bowel becomes more normal following treatment
with turmeric, less gas is produced inside the bowel, and fewer
cramps and bouts of diarrhoea result.

Mesua ferrea
(Nagkesar):
Nagkesar has
antibacterial, antifungal and anti-helminthic properties and shows
excellent anti-inflammatory and styptic activity. The dried flowers
are used for bleeding hemorrhoids and dysentery with mucus while
the fresh flowers are useful for excessive thirst, excessive
perspiration and indigestion. It is considered to be very useful
in Vata and Pitta disorders. The stamen is useful for controlling
bleeding in various gastro-intestinal problems.

Althaea
officinalis (Marsh mallow) Gulkhairo:
Marshmallow root has a high protein and mucilage-carbohydrate
content which the body can use to manufacture the necessary
materials for new tissue production. Marshmallow also has
mucilaginous (adhesive) properties enabling it to surround and
expel foreign and toxic matter, having a soothing effect on the
inflamed mucosal membrane tissue. Marshmallow has been found to
relieve irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the
respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts and to help normalize
mucous secretions.

Mochras possesses tannins and non-tannins like lupeol, ß-sitosterol
and its D-glucoside. It is used as a demulcent and tonic. The gum
is credited with astringent, tonic, and demulcent properties and is
used for dysentery, bleeding disorders.
