English Name Indian Gentian; Picrorhiza
Hindi Name Kutaki

Kutaki is trailing hairy herb with jointed zig-zag, elongate, creeping rhizome, 2-8 cm long, grayish-brown giving off-shoots at joints and also rooting at the nodes. Kutaki is used to protect and support the liver by improving the functioning of Ranjaka Pitta.

1In a clinical study, Decoction of Kutaki was given orally to 25 patients for four weeks. Liver function tests before and after treatments were recorded. Statistically highly significant (p less than 0.001) improvement was observed with respect to serum bilirubin, serum alkaline, phosphatase, SGOT, SGPT, serum total protein, serum albumin, (p less than 0.001) in herb tested group. No side or toxic effects were observed during the clinical study.

2Kutaki promotes bile secretion, detoxifies liver and blood and improves all liver function. It has potent antiviral, antibacterial and antipyretic action. It improves digestion and appetite.

3Oral administration of Picrorrhiza water extract significantly reduced CCl(4)-induced subacute hepatic damage in rats, probably by exerting a protective effect against hepatocellular necrosis via its free radical scavenging ability.
