Latin : Mangifera indica
English : Mango tree
Hindi : Aam
A large evergreen tree yielding most popular fruit. All the parts of
mango have a medidicinal value. The unripe, fully developed mangoes of
pickling varieties contain citric, malic, oxalic, succinic and two
unidentified acids. The ripe fruits constitute a rich source of
vitamin A; some varieties contain fairly good amounts of vitamin C
also. ß-Carotene and xanthophyll are the principal pigments in ripe
mango. The leaves contain the glucoside mangiferine. The bark of the
mango tree and seed kernel contains tannin. Mangiferine has been
isolated from the bark.
Dried mango flowers, containing 15% tannin, serve as astringents in
cases of diarrhea, chronic dysentery, catarrh of the bladder and
chronic urethritis resulting from gonorrhea. The bark contains
mangiferine and is astringent and employed against rheumatism and
diphtheria. The resinous gum from the trunk is applied on cracks in
the skin of the feet and on scabies, and is believed helpful in cases
of syphilis.
Mango kernel decoction and powder are used as vermifuges and as
astringents in diarrhea, hemorrhages, bleeding hemorrhoids and post
menopausal bleeding. The fat is administered in cases of stomatitis.
Extracts of unripe fruits and of bark, stems and leaves have shown
antibiotic activity.

Latin : Momordica charantia
English :
Bitter Gourd
Hindi :
Karela
Momordica charantia
is a monoecious climber with slender stem and yellow flowers. Its
principal constituents are lectins, charantin and momordicine. The
fruits have long been used in India as a folk remedy for diabetes
mellitus. The fruit has shown the ability to enhance cells uptake of
glucose, to promote insulin release, potentiate the effect of Insulin
and influence the enzymes involved in glucose metabolism. Lectins from
the bitter gourd have shown significant antilipolytic and lipogenic
activities.
In numerous studies, at least three different groups of constituents
found in all parts of bitter melon have clinically demonstrated
hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) properties or other actions of
potential benefit against diabetes mellitus. These chemicals that
lower blood sugar include a mixture of steroidal saponins known as
charantins, insulin-like peptides, and alkaloids. The hypoglycemic
effect is more pronounced in the fruit of bitter melon where these
chemicals are found in greater abundance.
Bitter melon contains an array of biologically active plant chemicals
including triterpenes, proteins, and steroids. One chemical has
clinically demonstrated the ability to inhibit the enzyme guanylate
cyclase that is thought to be linked to the cause of psoriasis and
also necessary for the growth of leukemia and cancer cells. In
addition, a protein found in bitter melon, momordin, has clinically
demonstrated anti-cancerous activity against Hodgkin's lymphoma in
animals. Other proteins in the plant, alpha- and beta-momorcharin and
cucurbitacin B, have been tested for possible anti-cancerous effects..
Two of these proteins-alpha- and beta-momorcharin-have also been
reported to inhibit HIV virus in test tube studies. In one study,
HIV-infected cells treated with alpha- and beta-momorcharin showed a
nearly complete loss of viral antigen while healthy cells were largely
unaffected.

bioactive alkaloids mucunine, mucunadine, mucuadinine, pruriendine and

: Nardostachys jatamansi
English : Muskroot, Indian Spikenard
Hindi : Jatamanshi
Nardostachys jatamansi is grows up to 17000 feet on the Himalayas, in
India, Nepal and Bhutan. Root of spikenard is nerve sedative, nerve
stimulant, tonic, promotes appetite and digestion. In Ayurveda, the
roots of Nardostachys jatamansi have been clinically employed for
their anti-ischemic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, neuroprotective
activities and promoting natural sleep.
Researches prove that ethanolic extract Nardostachys jatamansi shows
significant antidepressant-like effect in Swiss young albino mice. The
results suggested that the antidepressant-like effect of the extract
may also be due to interaction with GABAB receptors, resulting in
decrease in the levels of GABA in mouse brain. Thus, the extract may
have potential therapeutic value for the management of mental
depression.
Some
study provides evidence of effectiveness of Nardostachys jatamansi in
rat cerebral ischemia most probably by virtue of its antioxidant
property. Nardostachys jatamansi is a useful memory restorative agent
in the treatment of dementia seen in elderly persons. The underlying
mechanism of action can be attributed to its antioxidant property.
Jatamansi essential oil is extracted from the rhizome of the plant. In
India, it had been used since ancient times as an aromatic adjunct in
the preparation of medicinal oils and was popularly believed to
promote mental relaxation. Tibetan herbalists use jatamansi oil for
the purpose of hair growth and color restoration. The herb is used in
tribal medicine for incurable skin conditions and is believed to
contain anti-aging properties. It is one of the early aromatics used
by the ancient Egyptians and is mentioned in the Bible that mother
Mary used it to anoint the feet of Jesus.
Spikenard oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, antiseptic,
calmative, sedative and tonic. Spikenard oil can be effective for
tension, stress, migraine, nervous indigestion and insomnia. It has
rejuvenating qualities especially for the mature skin, and can help
with allergies, skin inflammations and rashes.
