Garcinia
Hindi : Amalvetas
Garcinia cambogia is a moderate-sized, evergreen tree. It bears
sweet-sour mixed fruits native to SE Asia and India. The fruit may

purple color. The fruit of Garcinia cambogia has been traditionally
used in food preparation and cooking, having a distinctive taste.
Garcinia has garnered a lot of attention of late as a popular natural
weight loss aid. The reason is that the rind of this pumpkin like
fruit is rich in a substance called hydroxycitric acid / HCA. The
major phytoconstituent of Garcinia cambogia i.e. Hydroxycitric acid

Latin : Gentiana kurroo; Picrorhiza kurrooa

Indian Gentian; Picrorhiza
Hindi :
Kutaki
Katuki is used to protect and support the liver by improving the
functioning of Ranjaka Pitta. The rhizome of Picrorhiza has been
traditionally used to treat worms, constipation, low fever, scorpion
sting, asthma and ailments affecting the liver. Current research on
Picrorhiza kurroa has focused on its hepatoprotective, anticholestatic,
antioxidant, and immunomodulating activity. It promotes bile
secretion, detoxifies liver and blood and improves all liver function.
It has potent antiviral, antibacterial and antipyretic action. It
improves digestion and appetite. Its active principle is kutkin and
apocynin. Kutkin is a stable mixed crystal of two C-9 iridoid
glycosides-Picroside I and Kutakosid. Kutkin alters the structure of
the cell membrane of hepatocytes to prevent penetration of the toxin
inside liver cells. Kutkin stimulates the action of nucleolar
polymerase A, resulting in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus
stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and formation of new
hepatocytes. Apocynin has been found to exhibit powerful
anti-inflammatory effects.
