Its active principle is kutkin and apocynin. Kutkin is a stable mixed crystal of two C-9 iridoid glycosides-Picroside I and Kutakosid. Kutkin alters the structure of the cell membrane of hepatocytes to prevent penetration of the toxin inside liver cells. Kutkin stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and formation of new hepatocytes.  Apocynin has been found to exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
