Latin     : Cinnamomum zeylanicum

English : Cinnamon

Hindi     : Dalchini

Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a medicine. Cinnamon is high in antioxidant activity. The essential oil of cinnamon also has antimicrobial properties. This property may allow cinnamon to extend the shelf life of foods. Cinnamon's unique healing abilities come from three basic types of components in the essential oils found in its bark. These oils contain active components called cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, plus a wide range of other volatile substances. Cinnamaldehyde (also called cinnamic aldehyde) has been well-researched for its effects on blood platelets. The cinnaldehyde in cinnamon helps prevent unwanted clumping of blood platelets. (The way it accomplishes this health-protective act is by inhibiting the release of an inflammatory fatty acid called arachidonic acid from platelet membranes and reducing the formation of an inflammatory messaging molecule called thromboxane A2.)

Cinnamon's ability to lower the release of arachidonic acid from cell membranes also puts it in the category of an "anti-inflammatory" food that can be helpful in lessening inflammation. Cinnamon's essential oils also qualify it as an "anti-microbial" food, and cinnamon has been studied for its ability to help stop the growth of bacteria as well as fungi, including the commonly problematic yeast Candida. In laboratory tests, growth of yeasts that were resistant to the commonly used anti-fungal medication ,was often (though not always) stopped by cinnamon extracts. It may be used in the treatment of some fungal tumors. Cinnamon may significantly help people to improve their ability to respond to insulin, thus normalizing their blood sugar levels.

Not only does consuming cinnamon improve the body's ability to utilize blood sugar, but just smelling the wonderful odor of this sweet spice boosts brain activity. In addition to its unique essential oils, cinnamon is an excellent source of the trace mineral manganese and a very good source of dietary fiber iron and calcium. The combination of calcium and fiber in cinnamon is important and can be helpful for the prevention of several different conditions. Both calcium and fiber can bind to bile salts and help remove them from the body. By removing bile, fiber helps to prevent the damage that certain bile salts can cause to colon cells, thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Latin name    : Cuminum cyminum
English name: Cumin
Hindi name    : Jeera

Cumin is one of the most typical spices of India. The fruits are used whole, and are often fried or dry-roasted before usage. It is a small, slender annual herb, with a much-branched angular or striated stem, bearing 2 or 3 partite linear leaves, bluish green in colour and having sheathing bases.

Cumin seeds are yellowish brown in color having a strong, slightly bitter aromatic flavor. The plants are threshed when the fruit is ripe and the 'seeds' dried. The strong aromatic smell and warm taste of Cumin fruits are due to the presence of a volatile oil. The aroma of the cumin seeds, like most spices, emerges best when dry roasted or added to hot oil or Ghee.

The chief constituent of the volatile oil is cumaldehyde. In indigenous medicine, cumin seeds have long been considered stimulant and carminative. They are stomachic, astringent and useful in diarrhea and dyspepsia. They are now chiefly used in veterinary medicine. The seeds showed antifertility and abortifacient activity in female rats. Latin     : Curcuma longa

English : Turmeric

Hindi     :  Haldi

Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a flowering plant in the ginger family, is widely used as a food coloring and is one of the principal ingredients in curry powder. The aboveground and underground roots, or rhizomes of the turmeric are used in medicinal and food preparations. Turmeric has long been used in Ayurveda as a blood purifier, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, appetite stimulant, antiarthritic, antibacterial, liver stimulant, and antibacterial and as an antiseptic agent. Its main constituent is curcumin, which has shown significant anti inflammatory properties due to its ability to reduce histamine levels and possibly increases natural cortisone production by the adrenal glands. Curcuma has powerful antioxidant  property comparable to vitamin C and E.

Curcumin, the active ingredients in turmeric, induces the flow of bile, which helps break down fats.  Extracts of turmeric root reduced secretion of acid from the stomach and protect against injuries such as inflammation along the stomach (gastritis) or intestinal walls and ulcers from certain medications, stress, or alcohol. Early studies suggest that turmeric may prove helpful in preventing the atherosclerosis (blockage of arteries that can eventually cause a heart attack or stroke) in one of two ways. First, in animal studies an extract of turmeric lowered cholesterol levels and inhibited the oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol.. Turmeric may also prevent platelet build up along the walls of an injured blood vessel. There has been a substantial amount of research on turmeric's anti-cancer potential. Evidence from laboratory and animal studies suggests that curcumin has potential in the treatment of various forms of cancer, including prostate, breast, skin, and colon.

Latin      : Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba

English  : Guar gum

Hindi      : Guar

Guar gum is extracted from the seed of the leguminous shrub Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, where it acts as a food and water store. The Guar shrub is a coarse, summer-growing, leguminous annual that is probably native to India and is widely distributed across Africa and Asia, and found cultivated in small quantities the United States and Australia.

Guar Gum may be very helpful in maintaining a healthy heart. A diet high in water-soluble Guar bean fiber (Guar Gum) is associated with decreased risk of heart attacks, because fiber is known to lower overall cholesterol levels. The glucomannan content in Guar Gum is believed to lower cholesterol by binding with it and keeping it from being absorbed through the intestines. In addition, the bulk forming fibers swell in the intestines and fill the intestinal tract, not only preventing cholesterol and lipid absorption, but the increased bulk-forming mass helps to rid the intestines of the excess cholesterol by facilitating its passage through the system.

Guar Gum is a water-soluble bulk-forming laxative, and as such, it is said to be effective in promoting regular bowel movements and relieve constipation and chronic related functional bowel ailments, such as diverticulosis, Crohn's disease, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome, among others. The increased mass in the intestines stimulates the movement of waste and toxins from the system, which is particularly helpful to good colon health, because it speeds the removal of waste and bacteria from the bowel and colon. In addition, because Guar Gum is soluble, it is also able to absorb toxic substances (bacteria) that cause infective diarrhea.

Guar Gum has been used to improve glucose tolerance in some studies. Research has revealed that the water-soluble fiber in it may help people with diabetes by binding with glucose and preventing its absorption. The movement of the bulk-forming mass through the intestines not only helped removed cholesterol but also decreased glycosylated hemoglobin, a measure of chronically high blood glucose levels.

For weight control, Guar Gum provides a low-calorie, bulk-forming, gelatinous substance in the gastrointestinal tract that gives one the feeling of fullness and satiety and may curb the urge to eat. Furthermore, its laxative action also helps to clear the system of excess weight by removing it in waste products.
