Eurasia, but is widely naturalized in the United

Externally, yarrow is
styptic (stops bleeding), astringent (makes tissue
contract), antiseptic (inhibits bacterial growth),
vulnerary (helps tissue heal), anti-inflammatory, and
possibly anesthetic. For external use, generally
either the fresh or dried plant material is used as a
poultice, or a tea made from the plant is used in
compresses or as a wash. It's also sometimes used in
ointments. Modern science has identified well over a

Among the more notable are achilleine (hemostatic),
apigenin, azulene (anti-inflammatory), camphor,
coumarin, inulin, menthol, quercetin, rutin, salicylic

many studies which have established the various
benefit of garlic on the human body.
Some
preliminary findings suggesting that garlic lowers
elevated serum levels of homocysteine (Elevation of
plasma homocysteine has emerged as an independent risk
factor for hypertension and fibrotic heart disease).
Garlic lowers cholesterol by inhibiting the
cholesterol synthesizing enzymes such as HMG-CoA
reductase or squalene epoxidase. It also Lowers blood
pressure which most likely results from inhibition of
angiotensin-converting enzyme activity (ACE,
The angiotensins are substances smaller than proteins
that act as vasoconstricting agents causing blood
vessels to narrow, Narrowing the diameter of the blood
vessels increases the blood pressure). It acts as
Antithrombotic by the inhibition of
adenosine deaminase. An antioxidant effect of Garlic

Andrographis paniculata
Nees (Acanthaceae),
the Kalmegh of Ayurveda is an erect annual herb
extremely bitter in taste in each and every part of
the plant body. The plant is known in north-eastern
India as Maha-tita’,
literally means the king of bitters.
Since ancient times, A. paniculata is used as
a wonder herb in traditional Ayurvedic systems of
medicine as well as in tribal medicine in India and
some other countries for multiple clinical
applications. The therapeutic value of Kalmegh is
due to its mechanism of action which is perhaps by
enzyme induction. The plant
extract exhibits
antityphoid and antifungal activities.
Kalmegh is also reported to possess
antihepatotoxic,
antibiotic, antimalarial,
antihepatitic,
antithrombogenic,
antiinflammatory, anti
diabetic antisnakevenom,
and antipyretic properties to mention a few, besides
its general use as an
immunostimulant agent. A recent study
conducted at Bastyr
University, USA confirms anti-HIV activity of
andrographolide. The major constituents in
andrographis are diterpene lactones known as
andrographolides.
These bitter constituents
are believed to have immune-stimulating,
anti-inflammatory, liver-protective, and bile
secretion-stimulating actions.
Along with its ability to
protect the liver and help the liver regenerate
itself, it has the added benefit of hindering the
replication of viruses, by altering cell-to-cell
transmissions. The ingredient andrographide is
suspected of destroying the virus’ communication
mechanism, preventing the transmission of the virus
to other cells by modifying cellular signal
transmission, thus helps in virus induced
hepatic problem. Andrographis contains many
flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory,
anti-microbial, anti malarial activity and have a
positive effect on the immune system.
In Sweden, Andrographis
has been used for more than 10 years as a primary
herb for the winter season for immune support. Andrographolide, chief
constituent extracted from the leaves of the plant,
is a bitter water-soluble lactone exhibiting
protective effects in carbon tetrachloride induced
hepatopathy.
It is considered to be a potent Anti-Hyperglycemic

has been used to improve memory and learning, increase
intelligence, reduce depression, promote longevity,
and decrease senility. It has been widely used to
treat a variety of psychological, behavioral and
cognitive problems. It is commonly used in herbal
supplements for problems like Epilepsy, Stress,
Anxiety, Depression, Alzheimer's disease, ADHD in
children and for enhancing memory and learning skills.
It supports the nervous system, particularly the
hippocampus in the brain, allowing the body to

quickly. Bacopa helps in repair of damaged neurons by
enhancing kinase activity, neuronal synthesis and
restoration of synaptic activity and ultimately nerve
impulse transmission, thus helps in Alzheimer’s and
other degenerative disorders of brain.
Concentrated extract of Brahmi contains the active
molecules Bacoside A &B. Bacoside A assists in the
release of Nitric oxide, that causes the relaxation of
the aorta and veins and allows blood to flow more
smoothly though the body. Bacoside B is a protein that
nourishes the brain cells. Triterpenoid saponins and
Bacosides of Bacopa monnieri play key role for
enhancing nerve impulse transmission. Herasaponin
present in Bacopa exhibits calming sedative action and
thus reduce sleeplessness.
Biochemically, nervous-system effects of Brahmi have
been attributed to an enhancement of the effects of
the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and possibly
serotonin or GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid).
