Nees (Acanthaceae),
the Kalmegh of Ayurveda is an erect annual herb
extremely bitter in taste in each and every part of
the plant body. The plant is known in north-eastern
India as Maha-tita’,
literally means the king of bitters.
Since ancient times, A. paniculata is used as
a wonder herb in traditional Ayurvedic systems of
medicine as well as in tribal medicine in India and
some other countries for multiple clinical
applications. The therapeutic value of Kalmegh is
due to its mechanism of action which is perhaps by
enzyme induction. The plant
extract exhibits
antityphoid and antifungal activities.
Kalmegh is also reported to possess
antihepatotoxic,
antibiotic, antimalarial,
antihepatitic,
antithrombogenic,
antiinflammatory, anti
diabetic antisnakevenom,
and antipyretic properties to mention a few, besides
its general use as an
immunostimulant agent. A recent study
conducted at Bastyr
University, USA confirms anti-HIV activity of
andrographolide. The major constituents in
andrographis are diterpene lactones known as
andrographolides.
These bitter constituents
are believed to have immune-stimulating,
anti-inflammatory, liver-protective, and bile
secretion-stimulating actions.
Along with its ability to
protect the liver and help the liver regenerate
itself, it has the added benefit of hindering the
replication of viruses, by altering cell-to-cell
transmissions. The ingredient andrographide is
suspected of destroying the virus’ communication
mechanism, preventing the transmission of the virus
to other cells by modifying cellular signal
transmission, thus helps in virus induced
hepatic problem. Andrographis contains many
flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory,
anti-microbial, anti malarial activity and have a
positive effect on the immune system.
In Sweden, Andrographis
has been used for more than 10 years as a primary
herb for the winter season for immune support. Andrographolide, chief
constituent extracted from the leaves of the plant,
is a bitter water-soluble lactone exhibiting
protective effects in carbon tetrachloride induced

quickly. Bacopa helps in repair of damaged neurons by
enhancing kinase activity, neuronal synthesis and
restoration of synaptic activity and ultimately nerve
impulse transmission, thus helps in Alzheimer’s and
other degenerative disorders of brain.
Concentrated extract of Brahmi contains the active
molecules Bacoside A &B. Bacoside A assists in the
release of Nitric oxide, that causes the relaxation of
the aorta and veins and allows blood to flow more
smoothly though the body. Bacoside B is a protein that
nourishes the brain cells. Triterpenoid saponins and
Bacosides of Bacopa monnieri play key role for
enhancing nerve impulse transmission. Herasaponin
present in Bacopa exhibits calming sedative action and
thus reduce sleeplessness.

Latin : Cichorium Intybus
English : Wild chicory
Hindi : kasni
Cichorium Intybus is a erect bushy perennial
herb 1-3 feet in height of family compositae.
It is cultivated throughout India .It is easily
recognized by blue or lavender flowers
(25-40mm). Flowers last only a day, opening at
about six o'clock in the morning and closing
soon after midday. They are found in the axils
of the leaves, a cluster of flower buds which
open successively. The leaves and stem are
hairy. Chicory
leaves can be added to salads and the flowers
used to garnish dishes. Roots are baked,
ground
and can be used in place of coffee, can be
blended with coffee to neutralise the effects of
sleeplessness & nervousness that coffee can
cause. Chicory is a popular
herbal remedy due to its healing effects on
several ailments. The ancient Egyptians ate
large amounts of chicory because it was believed
that the plant could purify the blood and liver,
while others have relied on the herb for its
power to cure "passions of the heart."
Chicory
is taken internally as a tonic and for loss of
appetite, enlargement of the spleen, jaundice
(hepatic enlargement), diarrhea & vomiting,
fever, gallstones, gout and rheumatism. The
inclusion of chicory root supplements in the
diet supports the proper metabolism of
cholesterol. The seeds contain 4.7 percent of
oil. The presence of tannins phlobaphenes and
reducing sugars is also reported in the seeds.
The powdered seed is said to remedy indurations
of the spleen. A strong infusion of powered
seeds is useful in obstructions or torpor of the
liver and in checking bilious enlargement of the
spleen with general dropsy. In addition, the
leaves of chicory may also be used as compresses
to be applied externally to ease skin
inflammations and swellings.

Latin : Cinnamomum zeylanicum
English : Cinnamon
Hindi :
Dalchini
Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a
medicine.
Cinnamon
is high in
antioxidant activity. The essential oil of
cinnamon also has
antimicrobial properties. This property may
allow cinnamon to extend the shelf life of foods.
Cinnamon's unique healing abilities come from three
basic types of components in the essential oils
found in its bark. These oils contain active
components called cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl
acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, plus a
wide range of other volatile substances.
Cinnamaldehyde (also called cinnamic aldehyde) has
been well-researched for its effects on blood
platelets. The cinnaldehyde in cinnamon helps
prevent unwanted clumping of blood platelets. (The
way it accomplishes this health-protective act is by
inhibiting the release of an inflammatory fatty acid
called arachidonic acid from platelet
membranes and reducing the formation of an
inflammatory messaging molecule called
thromboxane A2.)
Cinnamon's ability to lower the
release of arachidonic acid from cell membranes also
puts it in the category of an "anti-inflammatory"
food that can be helpful in lessening inflammation.
Cinnamon's essential oils also qualify it as an
"anti-microbial" food, and cinnamon has been studied
for its ability to help stop the growth of bacteria
as well as fungi, including the commonly problematic
yeast Candida. In laboratory tests, growth of
yeasts that were resistant to the commonly used
anti-fungal medication ,was often (though not
always) stopped by cinnamon extracts. It may be used
in the treatment of some fungal tumors. Cinnamon may
significantly help people to improve their ability
to respond to insulin, thus normalizing their blood
sugar levels. Not only does consuming cinnamon
improve the body's ability to utilize blood sugar,
but just smelling the wonderful odor of this sweet
spice boosts brain activity. In addition to its
unique essential oils, cinnamon is an excellent
source of the trace mineral manganese and a very good source of
dietary fiber iron and calcium. The combination of calcium and fiber in
cinnamon is important and can be helpful for the
prevention of several different conditions. Both
calcium and fiber can bind to bile salts and help
remove them from the body. By removing bile, fiber
helps to prevent the damage that certain bile salts
can cause to colon cells, thereby reducing the risk
of colon cancer.

Latin name : Cuminum cyminum
English name: Cumin
Hindi name : Jeera
Cumin is one of the most typical spices of
India. The fruits are used whole, and are often
fried or dry-roasted before usage. It is
a small, slender annual herb, with a
much-branched angular or striated stem, bearing
2 or 3 partite linear leaves, bluish green in
colour and having sheathing bases.
Cumin seeds are yellowish brown in color having
a strong, slightly bitter aromatic flavor. The
plants are threshed when the fruit is ripe and
the 'seeds' dried. The strong aromatic smell and
warm taste of Cumin fruits are due to the
presence of a volatile oil. The aroma of the
cumin seeds, like most spices, emerges best when
dry roasted or added to hot oil or Ghee.
The chief constituent of the volatile oil is
cumaldehyde. In indigenous medicine, cumin seeds
have long been considered stimulant and
carminative. They are stomachic, astringent and
useful in diarrhea and dyspepsia. They are now
chiefly used in veterinary medicine. The seeds
showed antifertility and abortifacient activity
in female rats. They have been credited with
aphrodisiac properties.

Latin : Curcuma

Turmeric
Hindi :
Haldi
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a flowering plant in
the ginger family, is widely used as a food coloring
and is one of the principal ingredients in curry
powder. The aboveground and underground roots, or
rhizomes of the turmeric are used in medicinal and
food preparations.
Turmeric has long been used in Ayurveda as a blood
purifier, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, appetite
stimulant, antiarthritic, antibacterial, liver
stimulant, and antibacterial and as an antiseptic
agent. Its main constituent is curcumin, which has
shown significant anti inflammatory properties due to
its ability to reduce histamine levels and
possibly increases natural cortisone production
by the adrenal glands. Curcuma has powerful
antioxidant property comparable to vitamin C and
E.
Curcumin,
the active ingredients in turmeric, induces the flow
of bile, which helps break down fats. Extracts
of turmeric root reduced secretion of acid from the
stomach and protect against injuries such as
inflammation along the stomach (gastritis) or
intestinal walls and ulcers from certain medications,
stress, or alcohol. Early studies suggest that
turmeric may prove helpful in preventing the
atherosclerosis (blockage of arteries that can
eventually cause a heart attack or stroke) in one of
two ways. First, in animal studies an extract of
turmeric lowered cholesterol levels and inhibited the
oxidation of LDL ("bad") cholesterol.. Turmeric may
also prevent platelet build up along the walls of an
injured blood vessel. There
has been a substantial amount of research on
turmeric's anti-cancer potential. Evidence from
laboratory and animal studies suggests that curcumin
has potential in the treatment of various forms of
cancer, including prostate, breast, skin, and colon.

Cyamopsis Tetragonoloba

Guar
gum
Hindi :
Guar
Guar
gum is extracted from the seed of the leguminous shrub
Cyamopsis tetragonoloba,
where it acts as a food and water store.
The Guar shrub is a coarse, summer-growing, leguminous
annual that is probably native to India and is widely
distributed across Africa and Asia, and found
cultivated in small quantities the United States and
Australia.
Guar Gum may be very helpful
in maintaining a healthy heart. A diet high in
water-soluble Guar bean fiber (Guar Gum) is associated
with decreased risk of heart attacks, because fiber is
known to lower overall cholesterol levels. The
glucomannan content in Guar Gum is believed to lower
cholesterol by binding with it and keeping it from
being absorbed through the intestines. In addition,
the bulk forming fibers swell in the intestines and
fill the intestinal tract, not only preventing
cholesterol and lipid absorption, but the increased
bulk-forming mass helps to rid the intestines of the
excess cholesterol by facilitating its passage through
the system.
Guar Gum is a water-soluble
bulk-forming laxative, and as such, it is said to be
effective in promoting regular bowel movements and
relieve constipation and chronic related functional
bowel ailments, such as diverticulosis, Crohn's
disease, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome, among
others. The increased mass in the intestines
stimulates the movement of waste and toxins from the
system, which is particularly helpful to good colon
health, because it speeds the removal of waste and
bacteria from the bowel and colon. In addition,
because Guar Gum is soluble, it is also able to absorb
toxic substances (bacteria) that cause infective
diarrhea.
Guar Gum has been used to
improve glucose tolerance in some studies. Research
has revealed that the water-soluble fiber in it may
help people with diabetes by binding with glucose and
preventing its absorption. The movement of the
bulk-forming mass through the intestines not only
helped removed cholesterol but also decreased
glycosylated hemoglobin, a measure of chronically high
blood glucose levels.
For
weight control, Guar Gum provides a low-calorie,
bulk-forming, gelatinous substance in the
gastrointestinal tract that gives one the feeling of
fullness and satiety and may curb the urge to eat.
Furthermore, its laxative action also helps to clear
the system of excess weight by removing it in waste
products.

Latin :
Emblica officinalis
English:
Indian gooseberry
Hindi :
Amalaki
Amla is perhaps the single
most often mentioned herb in the ayurvedic classic. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis, Amla or Indian
Gooseberry) is revered by ayurvedic healers as a
"wonder rasayana" capable of delivering a diverse
range of benefits to the physiology. It has a
reputation as a powerful rejuvenating herb. This
precious fruit is reputed to have the highest content
of vitamin C and E of any natural occurring
substances in nature. It promotes ojas and nourishes
all the tissues of the body and is useful in the
treatment of ulcers and hyperacidity.
A research team discovered
that when Amalaki is taken regularly as a dietary
supplement, it counteracts the toxic effects of
prolonged exposure to environmental heavy metals, such
as lead, aluminum, and nickel.. In the studies the
pro-oxidant or oxygen radical scavenger qualities of
emblica suggest that it is also very effective in
lowering the risk of many chronic disorders.
Other studies indicate that it is much more effective
than Vitamin C alone in reducing chromosomal
abnormalities. Amalaki juice has twenty times more
vitamin C than orange juice, and natural tannins
prevent oxidation of the vitamin content in a dry
condition – in other words, it is heat stable. Studies
indicate that the naturally occurring vitamin C of
amalaki is easier for the body to absorb than
synthetic vitamin C. This and other studies indicate
that naturally occurring vitamin C of Indian
gooseberry may be ten times beneficial to the body
than synthetic vitamins. The Vitamin C content of
Amalaki is between 625 mg – 1814 mg per 100 grams.
Other studies show that it
increases red blood cell count and hemoglobin
percentages, and enhances the anabolic phase
(metabolic processes involved in protein synthesis)
sooner. The dried fruit of emblica reduced cholesterol
levels, indicating that it is safe to consume on a
long term basis. Amalaki is the essential
part of famous Ayurvedic formula known as Triphala. It
reduces unwanted fat
because it increases total protein levels; this is due
to its ability to create a positive nitrogen balance
and it also significantly reduces the levels of free
fatty acids. In addition, Amalaki fruit in a raw or
natural form, reduces cholesterol and cholesterol
induced atherosclerosis (Obstruction of the arteries),
making it a useful natural product to fight obesity.
One study shows that it prevented atheroma
(degeneration of the artery walls due to fat and scar
tissue).

Latin name : Ferula narthex
English name: Asafoetida
Hindi name : Hing
The name asafoetida originates from the Persian
word aza (mastic resin) and a Latin word foetida
meaning stinking. It is also known as devil’s
dung because of its strong pungent smell. It is
an erect perennial monoecious herb with a long
taproot. Its pungent odor results from sulfur
compounds mainly Diallyl Sulfide. The root is a
source of the gum ‘asafoetida’; it is used as a
condiment and as a medicine. When the plants are
about four or five years old, they develop very
thick and fleshy, carrot shaped roots. Gum
resin is obtained by incision of these roots and
by drying the plant's milky sap. It is
antihelminthic, antispasmodic, expectorant and
nervine. A very little amount is sufficient to
flavor curries, pickle and a number of cuisines.
It is considered a digestive aid and it helps to
neutralize flatulence. Some people believed that
tying of small bags of Asafoedita around their
neck prevent from winter diseases.
The gum resin is used as intestinal antiseptic,
carminative, and for removing threadworms. It is
also used in the treatment of indigestion,
torpidity of liver, asthma, whooping cough,
flatulent colic, and in pneumonia and bronchitis
in children. Gum resin is helpful in scorpion

Karela
Momordica charantia
is a monoecious climber with slender stem and yellow
flowers. Its principal constituents are lectins,
charantin and momordicine. The fruits have long been
used in India as a folk remedy for diabetes mellitus.
The fruit has shown the ability to enhance cells
uptake of glucose, to promote insulin release,
potentiate the effect of Insulin
and influence
the enzymes involved in glucose metabolism.
Lectins from the bitter gourd have shown significant
antilipolytic and lipogenic activities.
In
numerous studies, at least three different groups of
constituents found in all parts of bitter melon have
clinically demonstrated hypoglycemic (blood sugar
lowering) properties or other actions of potential
benefit against diabetes mellitus. These chemicals
that lower blood sugar include a mixture of steroidal
saponins known as charantins, insulin-like peptides,
and alkaloids. The hypoglycemic effect is more
pronounced in the fruit of bitter melon where these
chemicals are found in greater abundance.
Bitter melon contains an array of biologically active
plant chemicals including triterpenes, proteins, and
steroids. One chemical has clinically demonstrated the
ability to inhibit the enzyme guanylate cyclase that
is thought to be linked to the cause of psoriasis and
also necessary for the growth of leukemia and cancer
cells. In addition, a protein found in bitter melon,
momordin, has clinically demonstrated anti-cancerous
activity against Hodgkin's lymphoma in animals. Other
proteins in the plant, alpha- and beta-momorcharin and
cucurbitacin B, have been tested for possible
anti-cancerous effects.. Two of these proteins-alpha-
and beta-momorcharin-have also been reported to
inhibit HIV virus in test tube studies. In one study,
HIV-infected cells treated with alpha- and beta-momorcharin
showed a nearly complete loss of viral antigen while
healthy cells were largely unaffected.

and Hindus worship it in the morning and evening.
Traditional uses of holy
basil are legion, and it is often taken in combination
with other herbs. The fragrant leaves and flowers, in
the form of tincture, tea or decoction are considered

Holy basil leaves are a
natural source of many important antioxidant compounds
that provide a wide variety of health benefits. Most
notably, eugenol, caryophyllene, and triterpenoic
acids, such as ursolic and oleanolic acid. Eugenol and
caryophyllene are aromatic compounds, so named because
of their pleasing fragrance or "aroma''. These
compounds, which are present in many plants, are
frequently utilized in essential oils because their
fragrant scent is believed to elevate both mood and

and the respiratory systems and has been shown to have
a rejuvenating effect on the lungs. Pippali plays an
important role in aiding the thermogenic response,
i.e. the release of metabolic heat energy. This effect
is the result of increased thyroid hormone level in
the body and makes Pippali a typical Ayurvedic
complementary component whose benefit is to increase
the bioavailability and enhance absorption of the
other active ingredients.
The fruit contains 1%
volatile oil, resin, alkaloids Piperin and
piperlonguminine, a waxy alkaloid N-isobutyl
deca-trans-2-trans-4-dienamide and a terpenoid
substance. The roots have piperine, periongumine or
piplartin, dihydro-stigmasterol, which have been the
reason that it is popularly used in traditional
practice to promote respiratory health.
Long pepper contains the alkaloid
piperine (about 6%), which is slightly higher than
its relative black pepper. Piperine has diverse
pharmacological activities including nerve depressant
and antagonistic effect on electro-shock and
chemo-shock seizures, as well as muscular in
coordination. It also contains one per cent essential
oil, which exhibits antibacterial activities.
A common use of the fruit is in

intestinal contents, encourages the reflex
activity of the bowel and cleanses the colon.
Psyllium contributes to the softening and
forming of stool, it is useful in lessening the
itching, bleeding, pain and other symptoms of
hemorrhoids, chronic constipation, and other
bowel disorders. It is also used medicinally for
diarrhea, acid indigestion, gastric and duodenal
ulcers, and urethritis. Fiber also promotes the
growth of friendly bacteria in the colon
necessary to keep harmful bacteria in check as
well as enhancing digestion and synthesizing B
vitamins Ayurvedic physicians advise it to be
part of healthy regimen as it has ability to
decrease symptoms of fatigue loss of energy and
other severe health conditions. Recent researches have reestablished its use of
reducing risk of heart attack by decreasing
serum cholesterol through proper excretion of
bile acids. Isabgol helps in eliminating

Pterocarpus Marsupium is a large deciduous tree . It
is native to Sri Lanka and India. Pterocarpus has a long history of use in India
as a treatment for diabetes. Pterocarpus bark is a
rich source of polyphenolic compounds that are
reported to have blood sugar lowering effects in
laboratory studies. It is one among the best
hypoglycemic, hypolipidaemic and hypocholestrolemic
agent.
Beta cell protective and
regenerative property as well as blood glucose
lowering activity of Pterocarpus has been
proved in various clinical trials. It was observed
that it can reverse the damage to the beta cells and
infact it can repopulate the islets. Also it restored
the normal insulin secretion. It is
also observe that It not only repair or
regenerate Beta cells, but may also act in a
protective manner i.e. preventing beta cells from
destruction by nullifying the effects of a toxic
exposure. This ability to offer protection to beta
cells in this fashion may be of particular benefit to
newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetics that are still
experiencing an autoimmune activity.
Epicatechin
present in Pterocarpus has insulin like activity, it
lowers blood sugar through unrelated pathway as that
of insulin. It has different cellular binding site so
it can maintain blood sugar without insulin. This
action is useful in Type 2 diabetes.

The
castor bean plant, an erect, tropical shrub or small
tree, grows up to 30 feet tall. The essential oil
extracted from the seed of the castor bean plant is
known as castor oil (Eranda taila). The oil contains
mostly ricinoleic acid, with small amounts of
dihydroxy stearic, linoleic, oleic, and stearic acids.
Castor oil is a strong and effective purgative
(laxative), with components in the oil that affect
both the small and large intestines. It has been used
to clear the bowels after
food poisoning and to relieve constipation.
Castor oil is classified as a stimulant laxative, also
known as a contact laxative. This type of laxative
encourages bowel movements by acting on the intestinal
wall, increasing the muscle contractions that move
along the stool mass. Externally, it has been
recommended in itch, ringworm, corns, warts and other
cutaneous diseases. Its external application is
very much useful in eliminating chronic fluid
retention in the joints where joint become swollen and
tender.
At present,
the most frequent use of
castor oil is in castor oil packs. The packs are
recommended for: cholecystitis (inflammation of the
gall bladder), poor eliminations, epilepsy, various
liver conditions such as cirrhosis and torpid liver,
scleroderma, headaches, appendicitis, arthritis, in
coordination between assimilations and eliminations,
colitis, intestinal disorders such as stricture and
colon impaction, in coordination between nervous
systems, neuritis, and toxemia.
