Latin     : Vetiveria zizanioidis

English :  Vetiver; Cuscus Grass

Hindi     : Khas Khas

Vetiver is found throughout the plains and lower hills of India. Vetiver root is fibrous and contains essential oil. The roots are cooling, refrigerant, diuretic, digestive, antispasmodic and tonic. Vetiver is useful in burning sensation, stranguary, colic, gout, spermatorrhoea, and dehydration.

Vetiver roots yield a volatile essential oil which is widely used in aroma and perfumery. Being a cooling herb it is used in the form of infusion as refreshing drink in inflammations, fevers and irritability of the stomach. Vetiver removes the excessive heat of the body and helps in burning sensation of the urine.

Latin    : Vitex negundo; Vitex trifolia             

English: Five Leaved Chaste Tree; Chinese Chaste Tree

Hindi    :  Nirgundi

Vitex negundo is a large, aromatic shrub with quadrangular, densely whitish, tomentose branchlets. Its principal constituents are casticin, isoorientin, chrysophenol D, luteolin, p –hydroxybenzoic acid and D-fructose. The leaves possess discutient properties and are applied to rheumatic swellings of the joints and in sprains. It can be applied locally in rheumatic arthritis and sprains. The juice of the leaves is used for the treatment of fetid discharges. They show anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and analgesic activities. It is useful in the treatment of superficial bruises, injuries, sores and skin infections. The essential oil of Vitex Negundo has been used to reduce inflammation and swelling of joints due to rheumatism and injuries.The main constituents of the oil are sabinene, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, β-caryophyllene, α-guaiene and globulol constituting 61.8% of the oil.

English : Grape; Grapeseed
Hindi     : Angoor

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. A period of time on a diet based entirely on the fruit is especially recommended in the treatment of torpid liver or sluggish biliary function. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. Grapes are a good source of bioflavonoid (vitamin P), which is known to be useful in such conditions as purpura, capillary bleeding in diabetes, edema and inflammation from injury, radiation damage, and atherosclerosis. Catechins and anthocyanogenic tannins present in grapes possess bioflavonoid activity. Grapes are demulcent, laxative, refrigerant, stomachic, diuretic and cooling. Raisins (dry fruit) are laxative, demulcent and expectorant, also considered as attenuant, supportive, nutritious and blood-purifier. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, hemorrhoids and capillary fragility.  Juice of unripe grapes and leaves are astringent.

Extracts of grape seeds contain proanthocyanidins and procyanadins, which strengthen the connective tissue structure of blood vessels and have antioxidant effects. Fruit contain grape sugar (glucose), gum, tannin, tartaric, citric, and racemic and malic acids, chlorides of potassium and sodium, sulphate of potash, tartrate of lime, magnesia, alum, iron, some albumin, ozotised matters and acid tartrate of potassium. Tartaric acid is the characteristic acid of the grapes. Raisins (dried grapes) contain calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and iron in an assailable form, besides gum and sugar.

Latin     : Withania somnifera
English : Winter Cherry; Ashwagandha
Hindi     : Ashwagandha

The name Ashwagandha comes from the peculiar odor of this herb, smell similar to a sweaty horse and because of its reputation for increasing energy, strength, and stamina like that of a horse. Withania somnifera is mentioned in the ancient text Kama Sutra as an herb to be used for heightening sexual experience. 

It is an important herb used in Ayurveda to combat stress and described as Medhya Rasayana (beneficial to the brain). Recent researches have observed that Ashwagandha acts as an antistress and adaptogenic herb.  The roots and leaves of the plant are used for medicinal purpose. It is a powerful rasayana with tissue building properties (Dhatupaushtic) meant for greater vitality and longevity. Its root is beneficial to people who do physical and mental labor or exercise a lot.

Withanolides are the most important bio-active constituents present in roots of Ashwagandha. Withanolides are believed to account for the multiple medicinal applications of Ashwagandha. Ashwagandha stimulate the immune system, improve memory and is considered to be an adaptogen. Regular use of Ashwagandha improves mental capabilities by enhancing the stress tolerance capacity. By virtue of these uses it is often referred to as "Indian Ginseng".

Ashwagandha showed antidepressant effect in both group housed and social isolates. The investigations support the use of Withania somnifera as a mood stabilizer in socially isolation behavior.

 It is traditionally been used as alterative, general and nervine tonic and for building sexual energy i.e. Aphrodisiac agent. It is known to help in sexual debility, general debility, and nervous exhaustion, loss of memory and loss of muscular energy. It is used to treat arthritis, inflammatory conditions, rheumatism, gout, hypertension, asthma, ulcer, insomnia, senile dementia and strengthening the female reproductive system.

Researchers from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India, have discovered that some of the chemicals within Withania somnifera are powerful antioxidants which act to provide defense against disease and adverse environmental factors and to slow the aging process. One other study found Withania somnifera was able to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and had a diuretic effect.

Withania somnifera (WS) root extract (ethanolic), which contains oestrogen-like withanolides for anti-osteoporotic activity. Withania somnifera extract, which has been reported to have potent anti-oxidant, anti-peroxidative and free radical quenching properties in various diseased conditions. The study demonstrates that the extract of WS may be helpful in protecting the neuronal injury in Parkinson's disease. Experimentally it is proved that Withania somnifera has a direct spermatogenic influence on the seminiferous tubules of immature rats presumably by exerting a testosterone-like effect.

Latin    : Zinc oxidum

English: Zinc

Hindi    : Yashada

It is specially processed zinc. Zinc is present in all tissues, organs and secretions of the body. It is essential for cellular reproduction which, is the process of growth and repair. Zinc is found in particularly high concentrations in the prostate and reproductive fluids. Zinc contributes to prostate function, testosterone synthesis and activity, and sperm development. 

It reduces prostatic enlargement by preventing the formation of dihydroxy testosterone from testosterone.  It  plays a significant role in protein synthesis, cell division, glucose metabolism and shows antiseptic qualities, provides a muscular body, proper nourishment to sperm and help cures infective conditions of sperm. It has shown beneficial effect in acne, wound healing and traditionally being used in prostatic problems, low sperm count, premature ejaculation and nocturnal emission.

Latin    : Zingiber officinale

English: Ginger

Hindi    :  Adrak; Sonth or Shunthi 

It is an herbaceous, perennial herb with aromatic rhizome. Its principle constituent are zingiberene (α and β zingiberene) and zingiberol. Zinger is carminative, expectorant, stimulant and used to  warm the respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract. It is a household remedy for indigestion, bloating, block wind and abdominal pain. It enhances appetite and regulate the digestion. It has antihistaminic and antidepressant action. It is soothing for cough, flue, cold and other respiratory problem.  It is one among Trikatu (other two are long pepper and black pepper). Along with black pepper and long pepper it enhances the absorption thus increasing the bioavailability of herbo-mineral supplement.
