Menopause is a natural biological process due to change in hormonal physiology in women at late 40s or early 50s that results in permanent end of menstruation and fertility. In Ayurveda, menopause is not considered as an illness or a problem because it is a natural transition in women from Pitta phase of life to Vata phase of life. Normally this transition passes off smoothly, but due to imbalance in Doshas it can result in unpleasant symptoms like mood swings, night sweats, vaginal dryness, hot flashes and low libido.

Asparagus racemosus (Indian Asparagus) Shatavari: 

It is a rejuvenating herb that cools the body, strengthens and nourishes the tissues. It balances Vata and Pitta and support proper function of the reproductive organs. It is traditionally used to regulate the production of female hormones, Shatavari may be translated as "having 100 spouses," implying its ability to increase fertility and vitality. Asparagus serves to build immunity, stimulate digestion, and enhances strength and energy.

Shatavari is highly recommended for menopause because it is a natural source of phytoestrogen and progesterone which ensure smooth menopause. Shatavari has the general ability to promote normal physical functions and counteract the adverse effects of stress. In eight different stress tests, Shatavari produced significant anti-stress and immuno-stimulant effects. It has demulcent property that makes it helpful for dryness during menopause. Dioscorea villosa (Yam) Varahi Kand: 

The pharmacologically active components of the Dioscorea species include diosgenin, which is a steroidal saponin, and dioscin, a form of diosgenin with sugars attached. Some studies indicate that diosgenin functions as a plant estrogen, and fresh yams have been used as estrogen replacement therapy.  

Dietary phytoestrogens can provide a wide range of health benefits, including protection from the development of some cancers, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and menopausal symptoms. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published two studies demonstrating that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) poses an unacceptable health risk for post-menopausal women. Pueraria lobata (Kudzu) Vidarikand: 

Pueraria lobata is an excellent herb that promotes strength, vitality, lustre and libido and reduces vaginal dryness. Pueraria exhibits estrogen like action on vaginal tissue to alleviate vaginal dryness and dyspareunia thus reduces the signs of vaginal atrophy. It helps to restore the atrophic vaginal epithelium in healthy postmenopausal women and improves the vaginal cornification and uterine weight. 

Researches suggest that long-term Pueraria lobata decreases serum PTH and calcium levels in aged menopausal women, indicating that Pueraria lobata ameliorates bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency.
