Chirayta:
According to Ayurveda, this herb is a
bitter tonic found in the temperate
Himalayas
at altitudes of 1,200-3,000 m. It
possesses anti Viral, anti-microbial
(against gram-negative and gram-positive
bacteria), anti malarial, antifungal and
significant anti-inflammatory activity.
A good herbal antiseptic and shows
anti-leishmanial activity. It also
yields a glucoside [1, 3, 6,
7-tetrahydroxyxanthone-C-2-ß-D-glucoside
(mangiferin)] which shows a significant
immunomodulatory potential.
Zingiber officinale (Ginger, dry)
Sonth:
.Zingiber
officinale is an effective remedy for
various ailments such as colds and flu,
nausea and stomach upsets.
It is a very
"warming" herb, and is used in "cold"
conditions. It inhibits the
growth of influenza virus by activating
macrophage system (cells which destroys
antigens). It not only reduces the
intensity but also prevents the
occurrence of flu by not allowing ama or
toxins to accumulate in the body.
Ocimum sanctum (Holy basil) Tulsi:
Holy basil has antibacterial, antiviral,
antifungal, analgesic,
anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and
antiseptic properties. It is a good anti
pyretic(brings down fever) herb. It
is rich in vitamin C, carotene, calcium
and phosphorus thus nourishes the body
and protects it from external assaults.
It raises the human body immunity by
increasing the antibody production. It
has been found to possess significant
anti-inflammatory activity against PGE2
and leukotriene. In many of the
researches it was found that extracts of
Holy basil, and its selected purified
components, namely apigenin, linalool
and ursolic acid, exhibit a broad
spectrum antiviral activity.
Researches have also shown that it
reduces excess immune response in
allergic asthma and allergies while
enhancing normal immune function.
Alpinia galanga (Greater galangal)
Kulanjan:
In Ayurvedic texts it is described as
warming and mildly stimulating to a weak
digestive system, liquefy the
accumulated kapha and good against
disorders like flu, sinusitis,
bronchitis, intermittent fever etc. Alpinia
galanga has anti-inflammatory ,
expectorant, and nervine properties. It
contains enzymes, polysaccharides and
nutrients, which exhibit antibacterial
effect and acts against streptococci,
staphylococci and coliform bacteria.
Curcuma longa (Turmeric) Haldi:
A good blood purifier, pitta pacifying
herb removes toxins from the blood,
treats active inflammation and reduces
the symptom like running nose, sneezing,
itching etc. Its antihistaminic
property helps in allergic disorders. In
cases of tropical eosinophillia haridra
has shown significant results.
The volatile oils and curcumin of
Curcuma longa exhibit potent
anti-inflammatory effects. Oral
administration of Curcuma longa
significantly reduced inflammatory
swelling. Extracts of turmeric and its
curcumin component exhibit strong
antioxidant activity, comparable to
vitamins C and E.
Andrographis paniculata (Creat)
Kalmegh:
known in traditional Ayurvedic medicine
as an immune booster which helps
reduce the severity of cold symptoms and
used as prophylaxis against bad cold and
flu. Andrographis has demonstrated
significant activity in fighting common
cold, flu, and upper respiratory
infections. Clinical trials were
performed to investigate the effect of
extract of Andrographis paniculata in
the treatment of upper-respiratory tract
infections. The study revealed that
andrographis can reduce the symptoms
associate with upper repiratory
infection especially throat symptoms
showed the most significant improvement.
Andrographis contains many flavonoids,
which have anti-inflammatory,
anti-microbial, anti malarial activity
and have a positive effect on the immune
system. In Sweden, Andrographis has been
used for more than 10 years as a primary
herb in the winter season for immune
support against flu.
Hyssopus officinalis (Hyssop)
Jufah:
Hyssop promotes the expulsion of mucus
from the respiratory tract. This herb
relieves congestion and helps liquefy
the mucus build up. It is active in
protecting epithelial cells against
damage caused by influenza A virus.
Cinnamomum zeylanicum(Cinnamon)
Dalchini:
Cinnamon has been traditionally taken as
a warming herb for "cold" conditions,
often in combination with ginger (Zingiber
officinale). The herb stimulates the
circulation and has been used for
controlling the symptoms of viral
conditions such as colds and flu. A good
anti infective agent, useful in
relieving cold, cough and congestion due
to its soothing action. It Pacify pitta
and helps in conditions of throat
irritation, burning eyes, headaches
etc.Cinnamon has been proved to be
useful in infectious conditions of the
respiratory tract
Piper longum (Long pepper) Pippali:
like its relative black pepper is a
powerful stimulant for the digestive and
respiratory systems. Pippali is strongly
heating, removes colds, congestion and
toxins and revives weak organ functions.
Pippali is a strong rejuvenative mainly
for the lungs and is used along with
other herbs in most formulas to increase
their absorption and effectiveness.
Piper nigrum (Black pepper) Marich:
It strengthens the digestion and helps in
eliminating the mucus and cleansing the
lymph glands naturally. According to
ayurveda the main cause of colds comes
from having a weak digestive system
which creates toxic ama. This ama when
gets lodge in the respiratory system
favours the replication of virus and
multiplication of bacteria. Ginger who
warms the digestion and respiratory
passage removes this toxic ama and act
as good prophylaxis against cold, cough,
flu etc. It is much employed as an
aromatic stimulant in weakness following
fevers. It has bacteriostatic and fungi
static properties. Piper Nigrum is used
in ayurveda to treat asthma, cough,
diarrhea, fever, gastric ailments and
indigestion. This spice can also help
in softening thick sputum, sinus
congestion and sore throat.
