Crocus sativus is valued for its famed condiment, saffron, constituted by the stigma and style of the flower. High quality of Saffron is grown mostly in Jammu and Kashmir.

1It contains the glycosides crocin and picocrocin together with lycopene, b-carotene, g-carotene and zeaxanthin. It is rich in riboflavine and also contains thiamine. Crocus sativus has showed encouraging results in reducing male infertility. It was given 16 male patients for three months. Kesar increased the sperm count remarkably; spouses of 13 patients (81.3%) reported pregnancy.

2Aphrodisiac activities of Crocus sativus stigma aqueous extract and its constituent-crocin, was evaluated in male rats and found effective.

3A natural antioxidant 3,8-dihydroxyl-1-methylanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid isolated from saffron showed better antioxidant activity than vitamin-E. A xanthone-carotenoid glycosidic conjugate, mangicrocin isolated from saffron showed significant adaptogenic activity.

Kesar stimulates Shukravaha Shrotas that is responsible for healthy sexual life. It nourishes Shukra Dhatu - the ultimate tissue formed after proper nourishment. It is used as tonic for general weakness and externally it indicated for skin glow.
