  Latin Name Cinnamomum camphora
English Name Camphor
Hindi Name Karpoor
Part Used Leaf

A large evergreen tree cultivated in India as a source of camphor. The plant is more commonly used in the form of the essential oil which can be obtained by distillation of the chipped branches, trunk and wood of the tree, or from the leaves and twigs.

Camphor oil provides soothing “camphor-ice” relief when applied to painful, stiff joints, muscles and ligaments. It is believed that it can inhibit the “catecholamine secretion” which helps in reducing the inflammatory response. The essential oil is also anti-helminthic, antispasmodic, cardio tonic, carminative, diaphoretic, sedative and tonic. It is also used in balms for chilblains, chapped lips, cold sores, skin diseases etc and as an inhalant for nasal and bronchial congestion.
