Papaya is a small, unbranched tree, with a single stem growing to 5-10 m tall, with the spirally arranged leaves. The lower trunk is conspicuously scarred with the leaf. The leaves are large, 50-70 cm diameter and deeply palmate lobed, with seven lobes.

1Papaya fruit is high in Papain, a potent proteolytic enzyme that supports the breakdown of proteins. In one clinical study Papain has produced therapeutic effect in persons with inflammatory disorders of the intestine and liver. Papaya unripe fruit is high in Papain and Chymopapain proteolytic enzymes that are used as proteins digestant, for combating dyspepsia and other digestive disorders.Papin is employed as a cure for diphtheria.

2The unripe fruits and ripe seeds possess anthelmintic property, the latex from green fruit is considered very useful in constipation, bleeding piles, enlarged spleen and liver. A food supplement containing enteric coated papain at a daily dose of 100mg-5000mg is used for controlling autoimmune diseases, particularly AIDS.
3Benzyl isothiocyanate is considered to be the anthelmintic in papaya seed extracts. 4Bacteriostatic activity of papaya is documented against several enteropathogens such as Bacillus subtilis, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumonia.
