  Latin Name Andrographis paniculata
English Name Creat, King of Bitters
Hindi Name Kalmegh
Part Used Whole Plant

Andrographis paniculata Nees (Acanthaceae), the Kalmegh of Ayurveda is an erect annual herb extremely bitter in taste in each and every part of the plant body. The plant is known in north-eastern India as Maha-tita’, literally means the king of bitters.

Since ancient times, A. paniculata is used as a wonder herb in traditional Ayurvedic systems of medicine as well as in tribal medicine in India and some other countries for multiple applications. Therapeutic value of Kalmegh is mainly due its active component – Andrographoloid that has shown Immunomodulatory activity. 1The experimental findings demonstrate that andrographoloid has ability to enhance immune function, possibly through modulation of immune responses altered during antigen interaction, & to reverse the immunosuppression induced by cyclophosphamide. 2Kalmegh extract has showed anti-inflammatory role for in asthma.

3The herb is astringent, bitter tonic and helpful in Influenza, Bronchitis, Swelling and Itches. It is also blood purifier. 4The extract and Juice of the plant on oral administration exhibited significant antipyretic activity in experimental rats. The extract of the plant induced significant stimulation of Antibody and delayed Type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to SRBC (Sheep Red Blood Cells) in mice. It is also good for balancing sugar metabolism and potent Anti-Oxidant. It balances Ranjaka Pitta which governs functioning of liver and pancreas.
