Part Used Rhizome

A tropical plant with a ginger-flavor rhizome, that is very popular in the Eastern - and Caribbean kitchen. The galangal is an aromatic perennial growing up to 7' tall. The creamy white rhizomes of galangal contain a volatile essential oil quite similar to that of the ginger.

1It is much used in rheumatism and bronchial catarrh. It is considered a tonic, stomachic, carminative and stimulant and is used as a fragrant adjunct to complex preparations and also in cough and digestive mixtures. It chief use is for clearing the voice. The drug has an expectorant action and used in many respiratory ailments. It has an anti-spasmodic effect which alleviates asthma.

2A study conducted in china shows its effect on immune system, 1'S-1'-acetoxychavicol acetate isolated from Alpinia galanga inhibits human immunodeficiency virus type 1 replication by blocking Rev transport. 3A study confirmed the analgesic effect of Alpinia galanga rhizome and hence justified its use in ethnomedicine for the treatment of pain due to various causes. The probable mechanism of its analgesic action may be central as well as peripheral.

4A study shows that p-hydroxycinnaldehyde from Alpinia galanga is a potential therapeutic agent for treatment of Osteoarthritis.
