According to Ayurveda, proper sleep brings happiness, nourishes and revitalizes every tissue of the body, maintains physical and mental strength, enhances vitality, improves memory and concentration power and leads to a healthy and long life. Deep sleep induces the secretion of an important growth hormone that helps body cells to regenerate, and repair damage caused by stress and U. V. rays. Sleep is a physiological phenomenon which affects physical and mental health in many ways. It is an equally vital requirement for life and good health like food. Healthy sleep maintains the life especially for the nervous system to work properly.

Poor sleep produces drowsiness, poor concentration, memory troubles and clumsiness.  In the long run, it makes people prone to stress, anxiety, low mood, low energy, irritation and weak immunity.

Dietary & Lifestyle Advice: Fresh fruits, vegetables and milk provide nutrients that are conducive to good sleep. Avoid irritating food and beverages containing alcohol or caffeine (such as coffee, tea, cola drinks, and chocolate) especially in the evening or before bedtime. Appetite suppressants and diuretics drugs also interfere with sleep. Avoid smoking just before bed. Maintain a dark and quite atmosphere in bedroom. Try to go to bed at the same time each night. Regularly massage your body especially head and sole before going to bed.

Bacopa monnieri (Thyme Leaved Gratiola) Brahmi:

Bacopa or Brahmi is a great nervine tonic, memory enhancing, cerebral activator and anti-stress ayurvedic herb. Bacopa restores mental functions and the physiological processes involved in relaxation and feeling of well being. It reduces restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, cloudiness of thought & over-activity of mind. Its tranquilizing effect is unlike sedatives (drugs which induce sleep) which often have side effect such as dullness, lethargy and drowsiness. It actually improves mental clarity. The ability to restore the normal biological clock of the body makes it useful for Jet Lag. According to various researches, it shows sedative and anti-depressant action by increasing the effect of Serotonin (a brain chemical known to promote relaxation and sleep) by blocking its intracellular depletion. Myristica fragrans (Nutmeg) Jaiphal:

It is mentioned in ayurvedic textbooks as sleep inducing herb (Nidrajanana). It relaxes the mind and balances the anxiety and stress.
